Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of quartz, and rates about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. It forms in layers inside volcanic cavities, which gives it stripes, eyes and moss-like patterns in natural grays, browns, whites, reds and greens. Dense and tough, agate takes a bright, glassy polish and holds fine detail when carved. Many agate slices and beads are also dyed in stronger blues, pinks and purples.
