Description of Amethyst

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, colored by traces of iron and natural irradiation in the ground. Shades range from pale lilac to deep violet, often with lighter and darker zones in one piece. With a Mohs hardness of 7, amethyst cuts cleanly into points and pyramids and takes a bright, glassy polish. Strong sunlight over long periods can fade its color, so it is best displayed out of direct sun.
