Black obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too quickly to grow crystals. It is not a mineral in the strict sense, and it rates about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. Obsidian breaks with smooth, curved conchoidal fractures that make very sharp edges, which is why it has long been knapped into tools and arrowheads. Polished, it has a deep, glassy black shine.
