Description of Lapis
Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than a single mineral, made mainly of blue lazurite with white calcite and golden pyrite flecks. Its deep royal blue has been treasured since ancient times for jewelry and pigment. Lapis rates about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale and takes a smooth, waxy to glassy polish that makes the pyrite sparkle.
