Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral best known for its raspberry-pink to rose-red color, often laid down in wavy white and pink bands. It is a soft stone, only about 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, so it is cut with care and finished slowly; once polished it shows a gentle vitreous to pearly luster that makes the banding stand out.
