Description of Ruby
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral that rates 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among common gemstones. The ruby used for tumbled stones and carvings is an opaque, commercial grade in purplish to brick-red tones, sometimes set in a green or gray matrix. Its hardness means polishing takes longer, but the finished surface is bright and very durable. Material sold as star ruby can show a six-rayed star when cut as a dome.
