In the crystal trade, rutile usually means rutilated quartz: clear to smoky quartz containing fine, needle-like inclusions. Rutile itself is titanium dioxide. Golden rutile shows bright gold threads running through the stone, while black rutile shows dark needles. The quartz host rates 7 on the Mohs scale and polishes to a glassy finish that lets the inclusions show clearly.
