Description of Smoky Quartz
Smoky quartz is the brown to charcoal-grey variety of crystalline quartz, colored by natural irradiation acting on trace aluminum in the crystal. Shades range from pale tea-brown to almost black, usually with good transparency. At 7 on the Mohs scale it is hard and durable, and it takes a crisp, glassy polish on both faceted and smooth shapes.
